The Tesla Science Center purchased Wardenclyffe in May 2013 through the crow-funding website Indiegogo, and the New York State provided a matching grant. We have Matthew Inman, the creator of the popular webcomic The Oatmeal, to thank him for launching the campaign. He said that the funds were raised by “geeks who felt a kinship with Tesla, a "geek at heart." Once the statue in New York was successfully unveiled, a separate Kickstarter campaign raised $127,000 to create a seven-foot-tall statue of Tesla for Palo Alto, California, unveiled December 7, 2013. The statue hosts a free Wi-Fi hotspot and a time capsule to "represent the power of the creative spirit and will inspire people from around the world to focus on humanity's greatest challenges."
