Lepoglava Prison was established in 1854 in the abandoned spaces of the Pauline monastery. Work and occupational activities of the prisoners are an important segment of the prison sentence rehabilitation program. In 1911, with the construction of a new central prison building and the Intermediate Department building in Cret, intensive agricultural production began. The first vineyards were planted, with prisoners being the main workforce. Today, there are 5.2 hectares of vineyards with 24,000 vines. Eleven grape varieties are cultivated at two vineyard locations. In 2006, a vineyard covering 1.7 hectares at an altitude of 272 meters above sea level was planted on the edge of a crater of an extinct volcano, on mineral-rich soil. In a modernly equipped cellar, 13 types of wine are produced, totaling approximately 30,000 liters. The wines are sold within the system, in hospitality establishments, and also in retail on the estate itself. Most of the wines have achieved the designation of "premium," and they have received the highest awards at numerous exhibitions.
