Decanter PREMIUM: Wines of the Year 2022
The Top Reds
In Decanter's Wines of the Year 2022, Italy's wines had a notable performance, dominating the classic wine category among the 63 red wine nominations.
Similar to the white wines, Italy's red wines stood out at Decanter's Wines of the Year 2022, with 16 nominations and five of the top eight reds, resulting in Italy winning the top award.
However, the competition was fierce among the classic regions, and the three expert judges had a thorough discussion to determine which of the 98-point scorers deserved to be named Red Wine of the Year.

Sparkling, sweet & fortified
Decanter's Wines of the Year 2022 had a total of 125 nominations, with only 19 being sparkling, sweet, or fortified. Despite the small number, judges were impressed by the diversity and high quality of these nominations.
At Decanter's Wines of the Year 2022 tasting, 125 global entries were evaluated over two days, and the 11 sparkling wines were particularly impressive and notable.
Following the first round of judging, two Champagnes emerged as the top performers, both with a score of 98 points. This led to extensive deliberation between Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW, Vincenzo Arnese, and Amanda Barnes to determine which Champagne should be named Sparkling Wine of the Year.
