Advancement in Biotechnology 2023
Scientists continue to develop mRNA vaccines to protect against various diseases following the success of BioNTech's Covid-19 vaccine. BioNTech intends to initiate human testing of vaccines for tuberculosis, malaria, and genital herpes in 2023.
In addition to mRNA vaccines, CRISPR gene-editing technology is also making strides in the medical field. The Swiss-American biotechnology company CRISPR Therapeutics could potentially receive regulatory approval for a CRISPR gene-editing therapy in the U.S. and Europe this year. Therapeutics is currently seeking FDA approval to treat two genetic blood diseases, sickle cell disease, and beta thalassemia. If approval is granted, the treatment could potentially be available on the market in the coming months.
It is unclear how the year 2023 will unfold. However, based on recent trends, long-developed technologies may begin to see significant advancements. For example, scientists have recently achieved a major breakthrough by using lasers to create nuclear fusion energy from hydrogen.
